Darin Bufalino, the reputed New England mobster who spent years in hiding in Ireland and Spain to escape a trial for armed robbery, was finally arrested at his home

Darin Bufalino, the reputed New England mobster who spent years in hiding in Ireland and Spain to escape a trial for armed robbery, was finally arrested at his home on Wednesday night by Massachusetts State Police as part of a major investigation into organized crime.

He allegedly hid in Ireland for several years, working as a male model and also at a pub, before he fled to Spain where he was captured and extradited to the United States.

Bufalino, 49, was charged with extortion, conspiracy to commit extortion, and being a habitual offender.

Police told the press that Bufalino's arrest was part of a wider case against 30 people, including the feared New England mob capo Mark Rossetti, jailed since his indictment on heroin trafficking charges in May.

Bufalino, described by law enforcement officials as a "long-term, well-known organized crime figure," fled the country in 1985 to avoid an armed robbery trial.

While he lived abroad Bufalino was charged in the 1984 murder of a Massachusetts drug dealer and he was was named one of the state's most wanted fugitives from justice.

Then in 1999 he was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for a 1993 bank heist and he was eventually released in 2005.

In January of 2009 he was rearrested for allegedly robbing a Massachusetts landscaper of $11,000 and he was currently free on bail, wearing an electronic bracelet, when he was arrested.

Notorious Quebec street gang leader Ducarme Joseph owns a six-bedroom stone mansion in a toney district of a Montreal suburb and he's put it up for sale for $1.6 million

Notorious Quebec street gang leader Ducarme Joseph, behind bars after surviving an assassination attempt this spring, owns a six-bedroom stone mansion in a toney district of a Montreal suburb and he's put it up for sale for $1.6 million.

The selling price for the stone-faced luxury home at 64 Radisson Street in Dollard des Ormeaux is $250,000 more than Joseph paid for it in September 2008, property records show.

Despite Joseph's lengthy criminal history and record for drug trafficking, violent physical assaults and gun violence, including a case where he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting and forcing a 12-year-old girl into prostitution, banking giant HSBC gave Joseph a $1,275,000 mortgage to help buy the Dollard home, a QMI Agency investigation has found.

This fall, HSBC was linked to efforts to provide 1,700 Canadians with secret Swiss bank accounts, and the federal and Quebec governments are now investigating possible tax evasion.

Joseph, who is scheduled to be released from a jail in Rimouski, Que., sometime between now and Nov. 1, needs either a sale or fast cash because he now risks losing his home, records show.

The cities of Montreal and Dollard des Ormeaux have filed notices they may seize the home for non-payment of property taxes.

His city tax bill is more than $10,500 a year; school taxes are another $4,600 a year, according to the real estate agent's listing statement.

HSBC filed a $24,569 lien against the property last month for unpaid debts.

Real estate agent Fadi Kaouk of Royal Lepage in St-Leonard, Que., confirms the house has been on the market for two months and that there have been a few visits. Kaouk describes Joseph's Dollard-Des-Ormeaux home as "a majestic stone cottage." Its interior features six bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, and a double garage with enough space to park six cars.

The residence includes three levels. All feature either ceramic or hardwood floors.

It also features a luxury gourmet kitchen with gleaming new appliances, though Joseph was frequently seen in the city's priciest restaurants, bars and eateries. It also includes an outdoor inground heated pool and hot tub, a well-equipped gym - and a sophisticated alarm system.

A video of Joseph's home appears on YouTube.

It shows very expensive leather furniture and sofas, massive flat-screen televisions, four-post wooden beds worth thousands of dollars each, the private gym, and a built-in and well-stocked wine rack in the gourmet kitchen.

It is not clear why police have not already seized Joseph's home using federal proceeds of crime legislation, which allows police investigators, with court permission, to seize assets and freeze bank accounts of known organized crime leaders.

However, Joseph has bragged of having influence in the political world, according to a 43-page police intelligence report by Montreal Police Sgt Det. Jean-Claude Gauthier that was tabled during a Quebec Court bail hearing this spring.

The police report stated Joseph was the leader of a violent street gang known as the 67's, named after a city bus that travels in the St. Michel District of the north-end Montreal.

It also described a summer 2009 incident that saw Joseph step in front of Montreal police officers as they tried to arrest a suspect who refused to identify himself in a downtown bar.

Joseph told the officers he would sick his lawyers on them, adding "that he knew people in politics who were far more influential than the City of Montreal police chief," according to the intelligence report. The people to whom Joseph was referring were not identified.

Gurmit Singh Dhak was executed Saturday, three years after he was wounded inside a Kitsilano restaurant.'Target' survived earlier attempt on his life

'Target' survived earlier attempt on his life: "Vancouver gangster and convicted killer Gurmit Singh Dhak was executed Saturday, three years after he was wounded inside a Kitsilano restaurant.
Dhak, 32, was sitting inside his luxury SUV in the parking lot of Burnaby's Metrotown mall at about 5:50 p.m. when his killer caught up with him.
Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said Dhak was alone in the black BMW, though others told The Vancouver Sun that his wife and kids were nearby.
'The shopping centre was open at the time of the shooting, however there were very few shopping patrons in the parking lot at the time of the incident,' Carr said.
He said the murder appears 'very targeted.'
Dhak was shot in the face, which is often the mark of a professional hit.
Police have seized surveillance video from the mall's security team.
Dhak and his brother Sukhveer have a long list of enemies.
Gurmit Dhak refused to help police catch the masked gunmen who shot him in September 2007 while he was at a birthday party at Quattro on Fourth in Vancouver.
Dhak, who has been associated with a criminal organization dubbed 'Billy's Crew,' was charged in 2005 with uttering threats to Vancouver police who stopped his Lexus SUV after it had been shot up outside Club Uranus, a strip bar at 315 East Broadway in Vancouver.
At the time, police said Dhak was 'very confrontational, very uncooperative with police and he made some threats.'
In April 2003, he got seven years in jail for the 1999 slaying of a 19-year-old who was shot in the head by a passenger in Dhak's vehicle, after Dhak lowered the window so the killer could take aim. At the time of the shooting, Dhak was on probation and under a court-imposed curfew."

New Boys associate who was shot twice in the neck at a Hindley St tattoo parlour Thursday night was gunned down after a fight with a former New Boys clubmate, aged in his 20s.

Sources close to the New Boys gang have told The Advertiser several young members - including former Central District and state junior footballer, Dylan Jessen - want out because of the rising level of violence within the gang.
Police also confirmed the New Boys associate who was shot twice in the neck at a Hindley St tattoo parlour Thursday night was gunned down after a fight with a former New Boys clubmate, aged in his 20s.

The victim, 17, is likely to be partially paralysed after surgeons removed two "small calibre" slugs from his neck.
He is refusing to assist police find the two men and a woman who returned to Ink Central after the fight and shot him.
The youth, who was alone in the parlour, is not related to New Boys leader, convicted heroin dealer Vince Focarelli, who owns the shop.
"He (youth) could have quite easily died as a result of what happened," Det Chief-Insp John Gerlach said.
"This is probably contained within the New Boys and it doesn't extend to the conflict between the Hells Angels and the New Boys."
The Advertiser was told tensions within the New Boys have spilled over and many members are attempting to break away.
Jessen joined the New Boys about the time he was told to leave Central District because of his behaviour within the club.
He has recently inked over the "New Boys" tattoos on his forearms and is known to be attempting to join rival club The Finks along with his friend, another break-away New Boys member, who cannot be named.
Jessen is yet to plead to one count of trafficking a controlled drug and two counts of possessing a prescription drug.
If found guilty, he could face jail and sources say he needs the security of gang affiliation while serving time. Sources say the New Boys fired a shot at the front door of Jessen's grandmother's Elizabeth East house on July 25 to warn him they were capable of doing him harm.
This outraged many New Boys who now want to leave the club. The disintegration is happening against a backdrop of an intensifying feud between the Hells Angels and the New Boys.
Last week a Hells Angel nominee pulled a gun on Focarelli at a Sefton Park shopping centre. Focarelli ran and was unhurt, but the gunman has not been found.
In April, 10 Hells Angels with steel bars and chains attacked a group of New Boys outside the parlour. In May, a man stabbed Focarelli's son, Giovanni, 21, in the stomach and chest outside Ink Central.
In February, two Hells Angels associates died after a bomb police said was intended for Focarelli exploded prematurely, about 50m from his former home at Enfield.
Ink Central is a gathering point for New Boys and a battlefield where violence regularly spills over, prompting Hindley St traders to call for it to be closed.
But police said it was not that easy. "In terms of running a tattoo parlour in the street, it isn't unlawful so it's probably not much we can do at this stage," Chief-Insp Gerlach said.
"What is illegal, though, is the actions of those going to the tattoo parlour and those leaving. Where they are criminal offences ... we'll take action."
Other traders are furious at the violence, saying law-breakers should not be tolerated.
B & C Security head Laury Bais, who runs security for 13 Hindley St venues, said Ink Central should be closed.
He said: "Why is an organisation that is known to be breaking the law allowed to run a business on a street which is relatively clean? I'd like to know why a 17-year-old was in a shop on his own with nobody else around; where was the protection?"
A spokeswoman for Police Minister Michael Wright said he was working with police to explore what powers, if any, the government had to close Ink Central. She said that process would include discussions with Adelaide City Council.
West End Traders spokesman Tony Tropeano said traders should co-operate with police. "It's important that these type of people who feel they are above the law are stopped. No one's above the law," he said.

SAWN-OFF shotgun, a loaded pistol fitted with a silencer and £11,000 of crack cocaine and cannabis has been uncovered in police raids.

SAWN-OFF shotgun, a loaded pistol fitted with a silencer and £11,000 of crack cocaine and cannabis has been uncovered in police raids.
Officers have hailed the crackdown as a blow to drugs gangs in Bolton.
And people living in Mayor Street, where the raids took place, have expressed their relief the guns are off the streets.
The street overlooks Queens Park, which has become a focus for rival gangs in recent years.
Only last year shell casings from a sub-machine gun used to execute a Salford supermarket worker were found there.
While Greater Manchester police say the raids carried out on Friday were not aimed at targeting a specific gang , the seizure of two firearms is a significant setback for organised criminals in the area.
Early on Friday morning officers from GMP’s Xcalibre Organised Crime Unit raided a flat above Pak Foods Asian grocers, which is not connected, and a neighbouring terraced house.
Crack cocaine worth £5,000 and cannabis worth up to £6,000 were recovered from the flat.
In the terraced house a few doors away officer found a sawn-off shotgun and a loaded 9mm Baikal handgun fitted with a silencer and a large amount of 0.303 ammunition which can be lethal, even when fired from long range.
A 52-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A and Class B drugs with intent to supply and a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing firearms with intent to endanger life and possession of ammunition.
Both men have been released on police bail until January 20 and the guns and ammunition have been sent off for forensic tests.
The raids were carried out as part of the ongoing Operation Brunel, targeting organised crime groups involved in supplying hard drugs in Bolton and Bury, Rochdale Oldham and North Manchester.
Detective Insp Rick Mortimer hailed the latest raids as “a fantastic result.”
"One more gun off our streets is an excellent result as it means one less weapon that could be used to injure or even kill someone,” he said.
“Although it is very difficult to say exactly what these guns were intended for, clearly any firearm has the potential to cause serious injury or even a fatality so to have seized both a sawn-off shotgun and a handgun before they can hurt someone is a good result.”
Several communities in Bolton have been blighted by drug gangs and last year their were three shootings as rival gangs fought a turf war on the streets of the town.
And in June this year an elderly couple in Leonard Street, Great Lever had their living room window shot at by a man riding a motorbike and carrying a sawn off shotgun.
Neighbours in Mayor Street welcomed the increased police activity.
All were too afraid to be named but one 23-year-old man told The Bolton News how the area has deteriorated in the 10 years he has lived there.
“It has got a lot worse due to the gangs. Lots of groups gather on the park, making noise and being violent.
“There have been shootings and it is worrying because there are a lot of children round here.
“I am glad the guns are off the streets. It will make life easier for everyone.”
Another resident added: “People have been frightened of the gangs. It is very bad.”
DI Mortimer urged the community who may have information about illegal firearms to call the Xcalibre unit on 0161 856 6479 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
“We have listened to what our communities have been telling us about how drug dealers blight their area, and we have sent a strong message that those who line their pockets by preying upon other people’s addictions will be targeted,” said DI Mortimer.

D.C. police have arrested a 21-year-old Washington man on a murder charge in connection with the U Street funeral shooting

D.C. police have arrested a 21-year-old Washington man on a murder charge in connection with the U Street funeral shooting, and officers were looking for a second suspect and the getaway car.
Brandon Miller was charged with first-degree murder while armed, Police Chief Cathy Lanier said. Police are asking the public to help them find a white Buick that was seen leaving the area of U and 13th streets NW during the lunchtime Tuesday shootout.
"We've done a lot of good work, we have a lot more to do," Lanier said Wednesday.
Police said two masked men approached a group of mourners in a gold sport utility vehicle and opened fire. The SUV fled down U Street, with gunshots firing from inside, before it struck a black Mercedes-Benz and flipped, resting upside down.
Mayor Adrian Fenty called the incident "tragic" and "scary."
"This was one of the most brazen shootings that's ever happened in D.C.," Fenty said Wednesday while announcing the arrest. "It's hard to remember someone coming up and shooting, literally, right when a funeral was letting out."
D.C. resident Jamal Coates, 22, was killed in the SUV. Police did not yet know whether he died from the gunshots or the crash. Another occupant was taken to the hospital, treated then released Wednesday. A third victim in the SUV refused a trip to the hospital.
Police said the shootout was a result of a dispute between two gangs whose members got into an altercation at the funeral of 21-year-old Ashley McRae. One of the gangs simply showed up to taunt the other gang, city officials said.

police dispatcher who allegedly received sex-related text messages sent by an OPD officer using his city-issued pager is a plaintiff in a civil lawsuit

An Ontario (S. Calif.) police dispatcher who allegedly received sex-related text messages sent by an OPD officer using his city-issued pager is a plaintiff in a civil lawsuit being appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Dispatcher April Florio was the girlfriend of officer Jeff Quon in 2003 when an audit of pager messages revealed the explicit messages, and that Quon had frequently gone over the message limit for the city’s pager account. Quon sent messages to Florio, his estranged—a former OPD dispatcher—and to an OPD sergeant, according to the federal lawsuit that claims the city had no right to read the pager messages. In 2007 a jury sided with the city’s contention that the pager and account belonged to them, that Quon had signed the city’s electronic device policy, and that they had the right to examine the account and messages. But a U.S. District court reversed the jury’s decision in 2007. The city appealed that ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court, and that court heard oral arguments on the case last week. The decision, expected this fall, is expected to set an important precedent on workplace privacy, especially involving company-owned cellular phones, pagers and Internet-connected devices. The court’s decision could apply not only to the privacy of the senders of messages, but also to the receivers. Read more about the details of the lawsuit here.
According to court documents filed by the city with the Supreme Court appeal, “This case has its genesis in gross malfeasance which, no one disputes, took place in the Ontario Police Department’s dispatch center in the early part of this decade.”
Dispatcher Sally Bors was under investigation in September 2002, “for providing information to her boyfriend Mark Timbrell, who was a member of the Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang, regarding police investigative activity about the Hell’s Angels in general and Timbrell in particular,” the documents state.

Ex-gang leader has insights to help save kids - CharlotteObserver.com: "Former gang leader Andre Norman learned three early lessons growing up in poverty:
It's OK to hit people. You have to protect yourself, because no one else will. And you don't have to explain your actions to anyone.
He learned this by watching his father beat his mother and abandon the family without ever saying why. And he learned by watching white kids throw rocks at him on the way to school without anyone trying to stop them."

U.S. Marshals Service spokesman Craig Smith said 37-year-old Derek A. Capozzi was captured without incident in Versailles (vur-SAYLZ') Saturday afternoon.
Capozzi escaped from custody on Thursday. He had been in Kentucky to testify in a federal trial.
In 2005, Capozzi was identified by federal prosecutors in Massachusetts as a member of a Mafia-affiliated drug gang that killed a 19-year-old woman suspected of cooperating with investigators.
Capozzi was sentenced to 23 years in federal prison for helping to dismember and hide the body. Authorities said he also was serving time for trying to kill a correctional officer."

John Gotti Jr.: Gangster’s son in a rare candid tell –all! | Entertainment and Showbiz!

John Gotti Jr.: Gangster’s son in a rare candid tell –all! Entertainment and Showbiz!: "One may venture to suggest that scarcely would one bargain for the son of a hard –core gangster, to appear for a tube tryst and spill dark and hitherto unknown secrets about their antecedents and shady operations.
Indeed, the sheer prospect of someone associated with the darker underbelly of society, suddenly appearing on prime time television and candidly laying out details about the codes and operations of their organized crime syndicate, would appear ludicrous on the surface.
However, as per the latest reports, it would appear that the scion of the infamous Gotti family, which for decades has been one of the biggest and most dreaded organized crime syndicates in the United States of America, appeared for a candid tete –a tete on network giants CBS, spilling hitherto unknown trivia about their shady operations.
On the evidence of the latest report, carried by Gather, it is learned that John Gotti Jr., also known as the ‘Dapper Don’, reportedly appeared on CBS’ ’60 Minutes’, and laid bare the story of how he and his father John Gotti Sr. ran one of the most feared and influential mafia syndicates in America.
Again, it also ought to be mentioned in this context that, despite putting him on trial on four earlier occasions, the Federal Government has yet failed to elicit a confession or conviction out of this dreaded scion of the Gotti family."

Sentence in killing of Bloods gang member | Philadelphia Inquirer | 04/09/2010 | GANGSTER

Sentence in killing of Bloods gang member Philadelphia Inquirer 04/09/2010 GANGSTER: "'Nathaniel Craig closed his eyes and squeezed off two rounds at an alleged rival drug dealer ordered killed by the Bloods street gang in Camden.
The 6-foot-7 former Camden High School basketball player was no marksman, however. His wild shots hit another Bloods member in the head while his intended victim fled unscathed, said Craig's lawyer, Murray N. Sufrin.
On Friday, Craig, 20, of Camden, was sentenced to serve 15 years for the death of his alleged partner in crime, Tyrone Powell, 19, also of the city.
'He never shot a gun before,' Sufrin said after the hearing, where Craig thanked Superior Court Judge Thomas Brown for giving him a second chance. Craig will be eligible for parole after 12 years.
'I'm not a bad guy, I just hung out with the wrong people,' Craig told the judge. 'I'm paying for my mistakes.'
He and Powell were armed with .38-caliber and 9mm handguns when they fired at their rival about 4:30 a.m. on July 18, 2007, at the Ablett Village apartments, said Assistant Camden County Prosecutor David Deitz.
The intended victim ducked behind a car that the two shooters riddled with bullets. Suddenly, the gunfire stopped and the man ran, Deitz said.
About the same time, Craig opened his eyes and saw that Powell had been shot in the back of the head. Powell ran to a nearby house, where he collapsed and died.'"

Open Carry Gun Owners Speak Out - CBS 42

Open Carry Gun Owners Speak Out - CBS 42: "He’s got a gun in his holster and he's not ashamed to show it. 'Your crime rate is a hell of a lot higher in England. For everything less than murder, every single crime you can think of is higher in the UK: muggings, stabbings, thefts in general. All because people can't defend themselves, in my opinion” said David Smythies.Smythies grew up in England where guns are against the law. Now a U.S. resident, he's exercising his rights. 'Americans don't know what they could potentially lose if they didn't come out and exercise their right to open carry,” said Smythies.'It’s a right. The opencarry.org saying is 'A right unexercised is a right lost.’ You might as well exercise your right before it’s gone,” said Timothy Brand, who also wears his gun on his right hip for all to see. You may not realize it, but in Alabama, it's legal to carry a firearm openly in public. But the second you conceal it, you need a license. That’s why a group of open carry supporters joined forces Saturday afternoon, hoping to inform the community. Together, they held a blood drive off Lorna Road in Hoover."
