Gangs in suits and nice cars robbing Cavan homes - News - Roundup - Articles - Anglo Celt
Gangs in suits and nice cars robbing Cavan homes - News - Roundup - Articles - Anglo Celt: "Cunning new gangs of criminals dressed in smart business suits and driving high powered Volvos and BMWs are cruising the rural roads in Cavan, Meath, Longford and Leitrim with one aim in mind – to rob as many homes as they can between 9am and 2pm.
They are mainly bent on stealing cash and jewellery and usually force rear windows with screwdrivers or iron bars. They are often armed with knives.
They are highly mobile and it is not unusual for them to be stealing in Mayo on Monday, Cork on Tuesday and Cavan on Wednesday. One senior garda source explained that they move all over the country and most of the gangs, who are based in Dublin, treat this activity as their way of life.
There is evidence that they mainly target houses that are not fitted with alarms and they keep going until they are caught by the gardaĆ. People are urged to lock up sheds and secure their properties, and if you answer the front door to a stranger, make sure that the rear door is locked before going to the front one.
These gangs are also visiting elderly people and offering to do power-hose cleaning or painting jobs at exorbitant prices. There is an inherent fear for the elderly being confronted by this situation, and some of these crimes are not even reported.
These gangs tend not to get flustered when confronted by members of the public in their homes and sometimes present business cards, claiming they are in a position to carry out various enhancement works."

Winnipeg's murder city madness | Winnipeg | News | Winnipeg Sun
Winnipeg's murder city madness Winnipeg News Winnipeg Sun: "Here’s more ammo for people who believe Winnipeg’s gang situation is out of control.
Winnipeg bucked a national downward trend and had the highest per-capita rate of gang-related homicides in Canada in 2009, according to a new report.
The finding is in a Statistics Canada study analyzing police-supplied homicide data and trends across the country.
Winnipeg had the highest overall homicide rate among Canada’s largest cities and Manitoba was tops among provinces for the third consecutive year, the report found.
It was released Tuesday on the eve of a Winnipeg civic election dominated by crime and public safety.
Reviews were mixed with some seeing the gang-related rate as a wake-up call and sign of worsening street violence.
“We’re at the tip of the spear and we’re not doing enough to combat it,” said Mike Sutherland, president of the Winnipeg Police Association."

Darin Bufalino, the reputed New England mobster who spent years in hiding in Ireland and Spain to escape a trial for armed robbery, was finally arrested at his home
Darin Bufalino, the reputed New England mobster who spent years in hiding in Ireland and Spain to escape a trial for armed robbery, was finally arrested at his home on Wednesday night by Massachusetts State Police as part of a major investigation into organized crime.
He allegedly hid in Ireland for several years, working as a male model and also at a pub, before he fled to Spain where he was captured and extradited to the United States.
Bufalino, 49, was charged with extortion, conspiracy to commit extortion, and being a habitual offender.
Police told the press that Bufalino's arrest was part of a wider case against 30 people, including the feared New England mob capo Mark Rossetti, jailed since his indictment on heroin trafficking charges in May.
Bufalino, described by law enforcement officials as a "long-term, well-known organized crime figure," fled the country in 1985 to avoid an armed robbery trial.
While he lived abroad Bufalino was charged in the 1984 murder of a Massachusetts drug dealer and he was was named one of the state's most wanted fugitives from justice.
Then in 1999 he was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for a 1993 bank heist and he was eventually released in 2005.
In January of 2009 he was rearrested for allegedly robbing a Massachusetts landscaper of $11,000 and he was currently free on bail, wearing an electronic bracelet, when he was arrested.

Notorious Quebec street gang leader Ducarme Joseph owns a six-bedroom stone mansion in a toney district of a Montreal suburb and he's put it up for sale for $1.6 million
Notorious Quebec street gang leader Ducarme Joseph, behind bars after surviving an assassination attempt this spring, owns a six-bedroom stone mansion in a toney district of a Montreal suburb and he's put it up for sale for $1.6 million.
The selling price for the stone-faced luxury home at 64 Radisson Street in Dollard des Ormeaux is $250,000 more than Joseph paid for it in September 2008, property records show.
Despite Joseph's lengthy criminal history and record for drug trafficking, violent physical assaults and gun violence, including a case where he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting and forcing a 12-year-old girl into prostitution, banking giant HSBC gave Joseph a $1,275,000 mortgage to help buy the Dollard home, a QMI Agency investigation has found.
This fall, HSBC was linked to efforts to provide 1,700 Canadians with secret Swiss bank accounts, and the federal and Quebec governments are now investigating possible tax evasion.
Joseph, who is scheduled to be released from a jail in Rimouski, Que., sometime between now and Nov. 1, needs either a sale or fast cash because he now risks losing his home, records show.
The cities of Montreal and Dollard des Ormeaux have filed notices they may seize the home for non-payment of property taxes.
His city tax bill is more than $10,500 a year; school taxes are another $4,600 a year, according to the real estate agent's listing statement.
HSBC filed a $24,569 lien against the property last month for unpaid debts.
Real estate agent Fadi Kaouk of Royal Lepage in St-Leonard, Que., confirms the house has been on the market for two months and that there have been a few visits. Kaouk describes Joseph's Dollard-Des-Ormeaux home as "a majestic stone cottage." Its interior features six bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, and a double garage with enough space to park six cars.
The residence includes three levels. All feature either ceramic or hardwood floors.
It also features a luxury gourmet kitchen with gleaming new appliances, though Joseph was frequently seen in the city's priciest restaurants, bars and eateries. It also includes an outdoor inground heated pool and hot tub, a well-equipped gym - and a sophisticated alarm system.
A video of Joseph's home appears on YouTube.
It shows very expensive leather furniture and sofas, massive flat-screen televisions, four-post wooden beds worth thousands of dollars each, the private gym, and a built-in and well-stocked wine rack in the gourmet kitchen.
It is not clear why police have not already seized Joseph's home using federal proceeds of crime legislation, which allows police investigators, with court permission, to seize assets and freeze bank accounts of known organized crime leaders.
However, Joseph has bragged of having influence in the political world, according to a 43-page police intelligence report by Montreal Police Sgt Det. Jean-Claude Gauthier that was tabled during a Quebec Court bail hearing this spring.
The police report stated Joseph was the leader of a violent street gang known as the 67's, named after a city bus that travels in the St. Michel District of the north-end Montreal.
It also described a summer 2009 incident that saw Joseph step in front of Montreal police officers as they tried to arrest a suspect who refused to identify himself in a downtown bar.
Joseph told the officers he would sick his lawyers on them, adding "that he knew people in politics who were far more influential than the City of Montreal police chief," according to the intelligence report. The people to whom Joseph was referring were not identified.
Gurmit Singh Dhak was executed Saturday, three years after he was wounded inside a Kitsilano restaurant.'Target' survived earlier attempt on his life
'Target' survived earlier attempt on his life: "Vancouver gangster and convicted killer Gurmit Singh Dhak was executed Saturday, three years after he was wounded inside a Kitsilano restaurant.
Dhak, 32, was sitting inside his luxury SUV in the parking lot of Burnaby's Metrotown mall at about 5:50 p.m. when his killer caught up with him.
Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said Dhak was alone in the black BMW, though others told The Vancouver Sun that his wife and kids were nearby.
'The shopping centre was open at the time of the shooting, however there were very few shopping patrons in the parking lot at the time of the incident,' Carr said.
He said the murder appears 'very targeted.'
Dhak was shot in the face, which is often the mark of a professional hit.
Police have seized surveillance video from the mall's security team.
Dhak and his brother Sukhveer have a long list of enemies.
Gurmit Dhak refused to help police catch the masked gunmen who shot him in September 2007 while he was at a birthday party at Quattro on Fourth in Vancouver.
Dhak, who has been associated with a criminal organization dubbed 'Billy's Crew,' was charged in 2005 with uttering threats to Vancouver police who stopped his Lexus SUV after it had been shot up outside Club Uranus, a strip bar at 315 East Broadway in Vancouver.
At the time, police said Dhak was 'very confrontational, very uncooperative with police and he made some threats.'
In April 2003, he got seven years in jail for the 1999 slaying of a 19-year-old who was shot in the head by a passenger in Dhak's vehicle, after Dhak lowered the window so the killer could take aim. At the time of the shooting, Dhak was on probation and under a court-imposed curfew."
