Winnipeg's murder city madness Winnipeg News Winnipeg Sun: "Here’s more ammo for people who believe Winnipeg’s gang situation is out of control.
Winnipeg bucked a national downward trend and had the highest per-capita rate of gang-related homicides in Canada in 2009, according to a new report.
The finding is in a Statistics Canada study analyzing police-supplied homicide data and trends across the country.
Winnipeg had the highest overall homicide rate among Canada’s largest cities and Manitoba was tops among provinces for the third consecutive year, the report found.
It was released Tuesday on the eve of a Winnipeg civic election dominated by crime and public safety.
Reviews were mixed with some seeing the gang-related rate as a wake-up call and sign of worsening street violence.
“We’re at the tip of the spear and we’re not doing enough to combat it,” said Mike Sutherland, president of the Winnipeg Police Association."
